Maori MP's page - updated

I've finally updated the Maori MP's page for April. Unsurprisingly Hone comes out on top. He is closely followed by newcomer Annette Sykes and Maori Party co-leader Pita Sharples. Hekia Parata and Pem Bird occupy the bottom positions. For the full list and accompanying rationale pop over to the page.

  1. Can you really cal Jamie-Lee Ross a Māori MP? He doesn't seem to identify as Māori, even if he is descended from a Māori. I guess he may appeal to a constituency that thinks like him, that just because they look Māori it doesn't mean that they feel they are Māori. It's an interesting commentary on ethnicity vs. identity.

  2. Yeah, that's true. I guess we cannot deny his whakapapa, even if he disrespects it.

  3. I think that David Clendon's work on East Coast drilling with Te Whanau a Apanui has been spectacular. I'd also recommend you change the name of the page from "Maori MPs" to "Maori Politicians".

With Peta and Brash - I'd say that Peta's stance has not been illegitimate, though perhaps it has been naive. Not ruling out working with any party in principle, and allowing policy gains and compromises to govern electoral decisions, has always seemed to me like the most genuine approach to take. However, suggesting that such policy gains might be possible in a government involving Brash is certainly naive.
